Basic Blackjack Rules

The Player

  • All cards are worth face value, face cards are worth 10 and aces are worth 11 or 1. (The player decides after each card.)
  • Each player must make an initial bet (known as an anti) before getting any cards.
  • Every player is dealt two cards face up, the dealer is dealt two cards with only one exposed.
  • Each player gets to choose, in turn, whether to hit (add another card to their hand) or stay (end their turn with their current hand value).
  • Any hand with a sum greater than 21 is "bust", and all bets forfeit.

The Dealer

  • After all players have played the dealer finished their hand.
  • The dealer must:
  • Always hit with a sum of 16 or less.
  • Always hit "soft" 17. A soft sum is any sum including an ace worth 11 points. So holding a 6 and an Ace is a "soft 17", the dealer must hit.
  • Always stay with a hard sum of 17 or more.

The Payoff

  • Any player who's hand is worth more than the dealer receives 1:1 on their initial bet.
  • Any player who matches the dealer's hand (called a push) gets their bet returned.
  • Any player who gets blackjack (an ace and a card worth 10) receives 3:2 on their bet.
  • If the dealer busts, all players who have not busted are winners.

And that's it! It's easy, right?

Advanced Blackjack Rules

So you got the basics under your belt. Now it is time to start exploring the advanced blackjack rules. Employing these tactics is what is going to make you some serious money!

  • DoublingA player with only two cards may choose to "double down." This allows them to match the bet they have already made and receive just one more card to their hand. After receiving the single card the player's turn is over.
  • Splitting: A player with a pair of matching cards may choose to "split." By adding a second bet, equal to the amount of the first bet, the player splits the paired hand into two hands, and is dealt a second card for each. The player then goes on to play each hand as if they are two separate players.
  • Splitting Aces: If a player splits two aces, they are only permitted to receive one card on each ace. Meaning a player splitting aces doesn't get to play out each hand. Any split ace which receives a card worth 10 does not give the player blackjack, simply 21. I.E split aces will only ever pay out at 1:1.
  • Insurance: If the dealer is showing an ace as his up-card, the player is offered the option to buy insurance for half the amount of the original bet. If the dealer does have blackjack your insurance bet is paid out at 2:1. If the dealer does not have blackjack you lose the insurance and play out your hand as normal.

Playing Two Hands of Blackjack at Once

Online blackjack at Silver Oak Casino allows you to play two hands of blackjack at once, which means you have two hands to beat the Dealer's hand with. This is exciting because many online casinos do not allow for this option.

After you click on the 'bet' button and place a wager, an arrow pops up pointing to the other betting circle, asking you if you wish to place another bet. If you want to, click on the chips again and place a second bet before you click deal. Two hands are dealt one after the other, after which the dealer is dealt their hand. Proceed with all the moves for each hand one after the other. The dealer will play after you stand on both. If you bust on any hand or reach 21 with one, you continue playing on the other. You can choose other options of split or double on each hand independently.

Playing two hands against one of the dealer means that you are typically going to either win or lose a lot faster, as you have twice the chances now to either win or lose. Of course, there is always the chance for a tie, in which case your gain is negated.

You're now Ready to Play Blackjack!

That's essentially everything you need to know to know in order to play blackjack online. With no cameras, croupiers, dealers, lineups, hand gestures or etiquette compared to playing in real life, online is easily the best place to learn and enjoy the game. You get to play at your own pace, and never have to wait for a seat.

Blackjack Variations

If you like blackjack, but are looking for a twist or just some more betting options, check out the games below.

Perfect Pairs Blackjack

We start with Perfect Pairs, because Perfect Pairs Blackjack is identical to Vegas Rules Blackjack in every way—only it offers an additional side bet.

In addition to your ante you can make a second independent bet based entirely on your two first cards. You will win on this bet if your first two cards are a pair a with equal face-values.

  • A pair of different colors pays 6:1
  • A pair of the same color (but different suits) pays 12:1
  • A perfect pair (same face value, and suit) pays 25:1

If you choose not to play the perfect pairs the game is identical in every way to standard blackjack. Most players will choose to play this variant exclusively, just in case they feel like placing a perfect pairs wager.

European Blackjack

European blackjack is very similar to the standard Vegas blackjack, but with two main differences:

  • The dealer deals himself just a single card, face up, instead of two with one up and one down 1.
  • A player may only double down with a starting hand value of 9, 10 or 11.

Other than these two differences, the rules are exactly the same. A blackjack is still worth 3:2, and a push gives you your bet back. You can still buy insurance and it still pays out at 2:1. This form of blackjack doesn't offer any additional "perfect pairs" type side bets.

Face Up 21

Face up 21 is a version of online blackjack, only available online. In this variant, the rules are follows:

  • All cards are dealt face up, including the dealer's cards.
  • The player's hand is automatically hit if their point value is less than that of the dealer.
  • The player may double once, but only with a hand value of 9, 10 or 11.

A blackjack pays out at even money in Face Up 21, and the dealer always wins in a tie (excluding blackjack).

Match Play 21

Match Play 21 is a bit of a departure from the classic version of blackjack. In this online variant the player is awarded bonuses for specific hand combinations in addition to the standard 1:1 payout of having a better hand than the dealer.

The major rule changes in Match Play 21 from classic blackjack are as follows:

  • All 10's (not face cards) are removed from the deck.
  • A player with 21 always wins, even if the dealer has the same.
  • A player may double (once) any time during the hand.
  • A player may surrender at any time during the hand.

Take a look at the table below for Match Play Blackjack's bonus hand structure:

Super 21

Super 21 is sort of like the version of blackjack you play with your friends in grade school, where having a six-card hand is an instant win. This variation of 21 is the middle ground between Match Play 21 and regular old blackjack.

While a blackjack only pays out even money (1:1), the player always wins with it, even if the dealer has a blackjack as well. Players are allowed to surrender any time, and there are four hands which will award the player a bonus.

Pontoon

Pontoon is an old version of blackjack with a little more action and a little more gamble to it.

The first difference you'll note is both of the dealer's cards are dealt face down. While this obviously puts you at a bit of a disadvantage, the rules open up a bit from here.

  • Players must always hit with a 14 or less
  • The player is allowed to double once per hand
  • Doubles do not end a turn
  • Players may split up pairs up to two times
  • A five-card hand beats anything but a "blackjack" (two-card 21)
  • The dealer wins on all ties, including both the player and the dealer having 5-card hands.

This means, unlike in standard blackjack, you can hit and then double after hitting, then hit again. In other words, you can benefit from a high degree of bet control.

A pontoon (same thing as a blackjack) pays out 2:1, and any five-card hand is an automatic win for 2:1 as well.

Good luck!

The Complete Blackjack Glossary

The pleasure of playing blackjack is enhanced if you are well-versed in all the terminology associated with the game. Below are common terms that you will come across while playing Blackjack.

Action: A gambling term that refers to a specific amount of money wagered in a certain amount of time. Five bets of $20 each are a $100 of action.

Banker: Usually the Dealer — online casino.

Bankroll: Money that a player has set aside to bet with.

Blackjack: A natural 21 using an Ace and a Face Card.

Bust: When the total value of a hand exceeds 21 the player loses the bet.

Card Counting: Tracking the cards that have been played to score over the Dealer with the remaining cards.

Double: Doubling your initial bet after receiving the first two cards dealt

Draw: Addition of another card to your hand-the same as a hit.

Even Money: When you cash in your bet at a 1:1 payout ratio.

Face Cards: Jack, Queen or King, all with a face value of 10.

Hard Hand: A hand in which any Ace is counted as a one and not as 11. This is done to prevent the hand from exceeding 21 as it would then go bust.

Hit: Ask for another card to be dealt.

Hole Card: The Dealer's face down card.

Insurance: A bet that you place when the Dealer's up card is an Ace. You are betting half of your initial bet that the Dealer will get a natural blackjack. If the Dealer gets a natural blackjack the bet doubles, if not the bet is lost.

Pat Hand: A hand with a total of 17.

Push: The Dealer's hand and the player's hand have the same total, leading to the players bet being returned.

Soft Hand: A hand in which an Ace is counted as 11 but whose value does not exceed 21. A hand can go from 'soft' to 'hard'. Take the example of an Ace and seven. It adds up to 18. If the player takes another card whose value is anything between 4 and 10, it means a bust. So the Ace will assume a value of 1.

Split Hands: If the first two cards dealt are of equal value, you have the option to play them as two separate hands.

Stand: When a player decides not to hit anymore.

Stand Hand: A hand that has a total of a hard 17, when the player takes no further action.

Stiff Hand: Stiff hands are usually hands that are valued from 12 to 16 and have little chances of winning.

Up Card: The Dealer's first dealt card, placed face up.
